In ancient times, fire-fighting instruments were very simple, nothing more than hooks, axes, spades, buckets and so on. The first truly dedicated fire extinguisher was invented in 1816 by the English captain Manby, a Norfolk man. It consisted of just one or two drums filled with more than a litre of water and compressed air.
By the middle of the 19th century, the French doctor Gallier invented the portable chemical fire extinguisher. Mix the bicarbonate of soda and water in a drum, and fill the mouth of the drum with a glass bottle of sulfuric acid. When used, the firing pin breaks the bottle, causing the chemicals to mix and produce carbon dioxide, which pushes the water out of the barrel.
In 1905, Professor Laurent of Russia invented a foam extinguishing agent in St. Petersburg. He mixed aluminum sulfate with sodium bicarbonate solution and added stabilizer. After spraying out, the foam containing carbon dioxide was formed.
In 1909, Davidson of New York obtained a patent for using carbon dioxide to press carbon tetrachloride from a fire extinguisher, a liquid that would immediately turn into an uncombustible, heavier gas to smother a flame. Since then, a variety of small fire extinguishers have appeared, including dry powder extinguishers and liquid carbon dioxide extinguishers.
